What You Add Up To

Norma Jeane was a 7. Marilyn was a 1.

A movie studio signed her. Then they said the name had to go.

A 7 is the girl at the edge of the room. She sees everything and says nothing.

Norma Jeane Baker
25 + 17 + 19 = 61
6 + 1 = 7

A 1 is who everybody turns to look at.

Marilyn Monroe
38 + 35 = 73
7 + 3 = 10
1 + 0 = 1

Same woman. She just swapped the name.

I'll send you one number a day, with the math attached.

1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4

You've caught the clock at 11:11. More than once, if you're honest.

Maybe you told one friend. I went and added it up.

On July 7, 2007, 4,492 couples got married in Las Vegas.

Nobody asked them to. They just liked the look of 7/7/07.

So noticing numbers is pretty normal. Plenty of people plan a whole wedding around one.

It really does.

I just think it's something.

That one doesn't sound like her at all.

Every week, one or two of them miss. Sometimes by half, sometimes by a mile.

I'll say so plainly. That's how you'll know I'm not just being nice.

The whole alphabet fits on nine numbers. That little chart is all I use.

I show every sum, start to finish. If I ever slip, you'll catch it.

What did you get?

Grab a pen and any scrap of paper. A receipt works.

Write your first name, then find each letter on the chart and add it up. Keep adding till a single digit is left.

Your name.

Your date.

Your address.

Each one comes down to a single number. I'll show you every step.
